Definition of False vampire

(Zool.) the Vampyrus spectrum of South America, formerly erroneously supposed to have blood-sucking habits; - called also vampire, and ghost vampire. The genuine blood-sucking bats belong to the genera Desmodus and Diphylla. See Vampire.
